Sunday Self Care Thoughts

Let’s chat about our bodies ever so briefly shall we? There’s just a couple of things to get out of the way right from the get-go.

Remember, I’m not a doctor, rather an observer and a person who cares about their skin and overall health. I’m also an independent consultant with Beautycounter and if you choose to make a purchase from any affiliate links contained in this or any post, I do receive a commission. Glad that is out of the way.

We all arrive on the earth in the most incredible package – our skin.

It is incredibly durable and resilient. We can scrub it, scratch it, poke it, clean it, paint it, burn it and it does it’s best to continue to protect our important squishy bits inside. But what happens when you assault this somewhat permeable barrier with things the body does not know how to process?

Our skin may react or respond with a rash or bumps or other undesirable breakouts. Some folks will attack these signals that the skin is unhappy or angry with harsh cleaners or oral medications that come with their own cautions.

Bodies are a lot like supercars. We need to care for them by putting them through their paces in a safe fashion. Take it on the track and move it. Get it out and let that engine purr every day, even for just 15 minutes. You wouldn’t put sugar in the gas tank would you? Of course not! Fill it with quality fuel.

Would you wash the outside of your dream vehicle with a gritty, dirty, greasy rag that you wiped a brake fluid spill up with? Of course not! You would source out the most gentle but effective cleanser available to you. You would take a soft cloth a buff and polish the paint to showcase it’s best shine. You would ensure it was completely dry before putting it away.

Are you doing that with your body?

Are you taking your body out for a spin daily? Even a 10-15 minute walk around the block can do your mental state a world of good. It helps keep joints moving. An orthopaedic surgeon I met said ‘motion is lotion for joints’ and I believe him. The expression move it or lose it can also be applied to your mobility. If you are not moving in any capacity you are able to, you will find that range of motion begin to decrease as muscles and ligaments lose pliability.

What are you putting in your tank? Real food? Real ingredients? Or do you reach for the meal in a box or bag or take out? Is meal prep hard? Yep, it can be tricky but not impossible. When making a casserole type dish, double the recipe and put one in the freezer. Or go a step further and divide the second meal into individual portions and you have a fast meal for one or a lunch in the future. Hard boil a dozen eggs for fast grab-n-go breakfast or hike food. Wash and chop all your veg and store them in containers. Need a snack? Hungry kids? Pull out the veg and problem solved. Helps speed up meal prep too as the bulk of the chopping is already done.

What about your outer coating? Are you using harsh cleaners and sketchy lotions? When it comes to getting the real inside info on your product safety, one of the best resources is the Environmental Working Group app. It is free to download and use. You have the world of information at your fingertips regarding your product in an easy to read format. Green, yellow and red graphics show you instantly a snapshot of any health concerns.

I chose to switch my entire product line, including all of my makeup to Beautycounter. I love the performance of the products, but more importantly, the mission resonates with every fibre of my being. I do not want to be used as a lab rat when I am trying to wash my hair. Nor do I do not want a child mining mica so I can have a sparkly pout. Yes, that’s a thing and a topic for another post.

Curious about shifting to safer products? Where to start? If you are at all curious about our mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone, just leave a comment or a message and I’m happy to answer any questions in a safe and judgement free space.
